A few years ago, I read an article about the “third-piece rule” for making your outfits look amazing. According to the article, sales associates at stores like Nordstrom and Madewell are encouraged to wear an outfit comprised of three pieces, not including shoes – so a shirt and pants would be two pieces, and a third piece would be an element like a blazer, scarf, or statement accessory. Why the third piece? It adds interest to an otherwise ordinary outfit, making you look polished, more interesting, and like you put a some extra thought into your look. This rule is easy to adopt in chillier months, with the addition of moto jackets, vests, and cozy scarves. But it’s a bit trickier to add a third piece to a summer outfit when it’s hot outside. Through some trial and error, I’ve come up with three easy accessories you can add to your summer looks to instantly make them more stylish.
1. Add a scarf. Silk scarves and bandanas are everywhere this season. I’ve been adding them to simple, solid basics to add some color and interest to my look.

2. Wear a panama hat. I’ve always been a hat girl – white blonde, fine hair meant that hats were a necessity in my youth to keep my scalp from burning. My parents brought me home this hat from Panama, and you’ve probably noticed that it gets a ton of wear. Aside from shielding my face and scalp from the sun, a chic straw hat adds some extra cool factor to any summer look.

3. Tie a denim jacket around your waist. I pretty much lived in my Levi’s denim jacket all spring. Now that it’s a bit hotter outside, I’ve been tying it around my waist to spice up my little summer dresses.
