Southern Hospitality

Back in December, I gifted my mom an overnight trip to Charleston, South Carolina for Christmas. My parents spend most of their time in Bluffton, SC, about two hours south of Charleston (my favorite U.S. city). Spending time with my mom in one of my favorite places was a much a gift for me as it was for her, so I decided to do a repeat for her 60th birthday back in April. We finally took our long-scheduled trip last week, and made the trek up to Charleston for a perfect summer Friday before spending the rest of the weekend back in Palmetto Bluff.

I discover new things to do and see with every trip to this fabled southern city, and this occasion was no different. We spent Friday morning strolling down King Street and visiting some of our favorite retailers. We stocked up on candles and trinkets at Candlefish, a charming candle and gift shop located on Wentworth Street, just off of King Street. We also did some window shopping at Worthwhile and picked up a few essentials (like this new Tom Ford lipstick that I’m obsessed with) at Cos Bar before heading out for lunch.

I didn’t think that our day could get any better (I mean, shopping is my favorite activity), but lunch turned out to be the main event of our trip. My mom’s best friend was coincidentally also in town for the day, and at the suggestion of the concierge at her hotel, we snagged a table at 167 Raw on East Bay Street. This tiny eatery with New England roots (the founder hails from Nantucket where there’s a sister fish market and restaurant) was a pleasant surprise. Set in a subway tiled open kitchen with industrial accents, the space is both cozy and hip. The restaurant is small, but every seat in the house was packed, with a line around the corner to get in. We started with the guacamole, which was accompanied by cubes of fresh ahi tuna poke. We then proceeded to sample most of the remainder of the menu – swordfish tacos, a tuna burger, and a lobster roll. The tuna burger was my favorite offering, but everything was fantastic. The service was also incredible – I even have a selfie with two of our super-friendly servers to prove it. I’m already dreaming about my next trip – I can’t wait to drag Andrew in for another fresh seafood feast!
