While I definitely appreciate fashion’s trend towards comfort/athleisure over the past few seasons, I’ve always struggled with how to incorporate some of these sportier pieces into my wardrobe. I particularly struggle with sneakers. I own them all – from Stan Smiths and Gazelles to Converses and the sportier Nike Juvenates. Every time I buy a pair, I picture myself looking Brooklyn-girl cool (hey, I did live in Williamsburg for a hot minute back in 2013). But in practice, most of these kicks have only made it out of my closet a handful of times – with the exception of my white Vans Old Skools, scored at a surf shop a few years ago. The Vans Old Skools first made their debut in 1977 featuring the now-iconic “jazz stripe,” and I was thrilled to see my beloved Old Skools making a comeback this past spring. Through some trial and error, I’ve developed my own guidelines for rocking these iconic sneaks IRL.
My main rule: pair them with something unexpected. In this case, a high-fashion handbag and swingy wide-leg pants in a drapey crepe.
I plan on sporting my Old Skools throughout the upcoming season. Looking for some inspo on how to wear your favorite kicks? A few more unexpected ideas below:
- Throw them on with a mini dress.
- Pair them with leather leggings.
- Rock them with overalls.
