The past few months have been rough on my skin. I blame stress, travel, and inconsistency in my skincare routine. I’ve spent the past few weeks restocking my medicine cabinet with new products to make sure that my skin is clear and glowing this summer. I’ve recently been focusing more on “clean” beauty products (e.g. made with natural ingredients and formulated without sulfates, parabens, phthalates and other harmful chemicals), so you’ll notice that most of these products fit those criteria.
I’m guilty of forgetting to take off my makeup before bed almost all of the time, so that’s something I’m trying to get better about sticking to lately. I’ve been using Honest Beauty Refreshingly Clean Makeup Remover Wipes at the end of the day, which take off even the most stubborn of mascaras but are still gentle on your skin. I also wash my face morning and night with micellar water – I’m a fan of the Yes to Cucumbers version, which has a relaxing, spa-like scent.
After reading about facial oils for a few months, I finally decided to pull the trigger and test one out. The oil doesn’t make me break out, but instead makes my skin look supple and vibrant. Here’s why it works, according to Well + Good: The smaller oil molecules can penetrate into the skin and nourish it, while creams can’t. The skin likes oil because it resembles its cell structure; so it lets it in. Oils also help protect the skin from water loss and feed it hydrating, firming nutrients like essential fatty acids, gamma linoleic acid, and vitamin E that help boost elasticity. Lastly, using pure face oils spares you from chemical emulsifiers that many face creams and lotions need to keep the oils from separating with the water. I’ve been using Origins Plantscription Youth Renewing Facial Oil twice a day under my moisturizer. Speaking of moisturizer, Yes to Cucumbers Daily Calming Moisturizer delivers a blend of organic cucumbers, aloe vera and Dead Sea minerals to give skin a smoothing, hydrating boost. The lotion is also enriched with spirulina to protect against irritants. And at under $15, this calming lotion packs some serious bang for its buck.
Living in South Florida, I have to be very careful about sun protection. I’ve become a huge fan of the entire Supergoop! line – all of the products are formulated with antioxidant ingredients to nourish your skin while also protecting from harmful UV rays. I like to layer the City Sunscreen Serum under my makeup and finish my look with the brand’s Defense Refresh Setting Mist – a three-in-one, weightless mist that sets makeup, helps control oil and shine, and refreshes your defense against photoaging UV rays. The rosemary and mint scent is also super refreshing, so I love reapplying it throughout the day for a little pick-me-up.
Since beauty really does come from within, I’ve been stepping up my supplements came across the board. I’m about 2 weeks into a new vitamin regimen from HUM nutrition, and am already seeing a difference in my skin as well as my energy levels. After taking the brand’s quiz to identify my needs, I was given customized recommendations for three supplements: OMG! Omega the Great, a high-potency fish oil dietary supplement that supports even skin tone and a healthy heart and body; Uber Energy, designed to help support resistance to fatigue and tension and formulated with vitamin B5, B6, L-tyrosine, and a collection of eight balancing herbs including eleuthero, ashwagandha, and rhodiola; and Red Carpet, made from bio-available nutrients from black currant and sunflower seeds to support fuller, shinier hair and glowing skin. I’ve also been drinking the brand’s Raw Beauty To-Go Skin and Energy Superfood Powder mixed with almond milk or water every afternoon – this health-boosting Superfood Powder is enriched with organic green superfoods, antioxidants, adaptogenic herbs, fiber, a full serving of fruit and vegetables, digestive enzymes, and probiotics. The mint chip flavor is surprisingly delicious, and I actually find myself looking forward to drinking it every day.
